My Son had Febrile Seizure!

So Tuesday night my son had a Febrile Seizure. This was my first time witnessing a seizure and his first seizure. Before he had the full blown seizure he was just shaking. I had called my mother who lives in the building behind us. She hanged up the phone and I called 911 when it was happening.

Had it not been for the train 911 operator and the medics who came to our apt I would of been in a full blown panic and my son Ethan would of been in a much worse position.

I’ve done some research on Febrile Seizures. And this is what it is.

Convulsion in a child that may be caused by a spike in body temperature (fever).

Rare

Fewer than 200,000 US cases per year

Treatable by a medical professional

Requires a medical diagnosis

Lab tests or imaging not required

Short-term: resolves within days to weeks

A febrile seizure most commonly occurs on the first day of a fever. It may last a few minutes and is usually harmless.

Symptoms may include staring, severe shaking, or tightening of the muscles. A child may lose consciousness.

Children should be evaluated if it’s their first seizure. Emergency medical care is needed for repeated seizures or those lasting over 10 minutes. Medications to treat fever and persistent seizures may be used.

According the the Mayo Clinic.

My sons Drs at the Children’s hospital said I did the right thing by calling 911 when I did. I’m going to the #18 Firehouse in St. Paul. To thank the first responrs. Who helped us on Tuesday night.

Ethan is doing better than Tuesday and back in Preschool.
